PTC students win big at 2011 Skills competition
4/26/2011
Pulaski Technical College brought home 21 medals from the Arkansas SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Championship last week in Hot Springs, including eight gold, eight silver and five bronze medals.
The winners and their instructors will be honored Thursday evening at the Technical and Industrial Education Advisory dinner on the main campus.
Pulaski Tech was well-represented at the two-day event held April 19-20 at the Hot Springs Conference and Convention Center.
Students from the Pulaski Technical College Arkansas Culinary School won five medals, including two golds. Students in the Technical and Industrial Division brought home seven medals. Students in Ray Hoover's class swept the Small Engine Repair category, marking the college's 28th straight, gold-medal finish in this category. Hoover's students also brought home gold and silver medals in Motorcycle Repair Technology, and Jacob Standley's students received gold and silver medals in Collision Repair Technology.
Students from the Saline County Career Center competed in both the college-level and high-school level competitions, bringing home nine medals altogether, including four gold medals.
High school students who win or place in the state SkillsUSA competition receive a tuition waiver to attend Pulaski Tech, and that scholarship is renewable for four semesters as long as they maintain a minimum 3.9 grade-point average. At the post-secondary competition, gold and silver medalists receive a tuition wavier, renewable for two semesters.
Gold medalists also advance to the National Leadership and Skills Conference to be held June 19-24 in Kansas City, Mo.
