October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Pulaski Tech has several initiatives going on this month to raise awareness of this issue which affects our campus.
More than 100 t-shirts made by PTC students and staff will be on display Oct. 9-15 as part of The Clothesline Project. This very visual display of tee-shirts bears witness to the survivors and victims of domestic violence, helps with the healing process, educates and raises awareness of domestic violence, and provides a network of support and information.
In addition, the Silent Witness Project, a program of the Arkansas Coalition Against Domestic Violence, will also be on display. The project includes a display of life-sized silhouettes, each representing someone murdered by domestic violence.
Information booths will be set up in the Campus Center foyer and at Little Rock-South and Little Rock-West where local agencies and shelters will provide information and resources related to domestic violence issues.
The Clothesline and Silent Witness projects will be displayed at the following times and dates:
At each college site, white t-shirts and craft supplies will be available for students to design a shirt in memory of someone affected by domestic violence.
The theme this year is "See-Learn-Respond." As a service project, the college community will collect donations of old cell phones for the Arkansas Coalition Against Domestic Violence, which refurbishes the phones and gives them to women in dangerous situations as a life line.
We'll also collect donations for Women and Children First, which assists victims of domestic abuse. The shelter is in need of the following items: Toiletries, paper towels, household cleaning supplies, diapers - Size 5, wet wipes, bath and hand towels, laundry detergent, kitchen trash bags and 33-gallon size bags, hand soap and Pine-Sol. Collection boxes will be available at each display site.
The campus event is sponsored by Pulaski Technical College's Counseling Services, Division of Fine Arts and Humanities, and Public Relations and Marketing office.
