Pulaski Technical College celebrated the opening of Ottenheimer Library on Friday with an open house that drew more than 500 students, faculty, staff and community leaders.
The day's festivities began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. with officials from the North Little Rock and Little Rock Regional Chambers of Commerce followed by a drop-in reception. Guests were treated to refreshments and the jazz music courtesy of the Guido Ritchie Duo.
The event gave area business leaders and community members a chance to see the newly renovated library and learn about its many offerings.
Renovation and expansion of the existing library more than doubled the library's space from 7,798 square feet to 19,254 square feet.
The project began in May 2004 and was completed this summer. The two-story library is named in honor of the Ottenheimer Brothers Foundation, which contributed $500,000 --- the largest single gift the college has ever received.
The library expansion is part of an overall $19 million project that included renovating and expanding the library and building the Campus Center. The college issued $15 million in revenue bonds for the project, and the Pulaski Technical College Foundation launched the college's first-ever capital campaign to raise $4 million for the projects. The Campus Center grand opening is scheduled for Sept. 28.
"This project has enabled us to improve both the quality and quantity of our library resources," Pulaski Technical College President Dr. Dan F. Bakke said. "It is a tremendous resource for our faculty, staff and most importantly, our students."
The Ottenheimer Library features more than 34,000 books, multimedia and e-book titles, 36 research computers, six catalog search stations, 24 laptops students can borrow for use inside the library, more than 35 databases available on and off campus, seven individual study rooms and two group study rooms, three viewing/listening study rooms, six comfortable seating/study areas, 11 large, lighted study tables, and copy centers on both floors.
The library's six-member staff has tailored their services to meet the many-faceted needs of their patrons. Programs include the Online Embedded Librarian Program, information literacy training, individual research assistance, and Ask-a-Librarian for e-mail assistance.
The library is open 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Friday; and 7:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
