Pulaski Tech TRIO Scholars have new home
10/5/2006

Pulaski Technical College's TRiO Scholars program celebrated its one-year anniversary and move to its new campus home with an open house celebration Thursday.

The program, previously housed in the portable trailers beside the Administration building, now has a more permanent home in Rooms A-127, A-128, and A-134.

Faculty, staff, and several of the program's 180 participants attended the open house, which featured photo displays of scholars' activities and a video on TRiO students' experiences surviving Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the Gulf Coast region.

TRiO Scholars is a federally funded Student Support Services program that works with first-generation college students who meet income requirements and/or have a documented disability.

Participants receive tutoring and mentoring, academic and financial counseling, and career counseling. Workshops on life skills, such as time management, computer skills, resume writing, job interviewing, and study techniques are offered throughout the academic year.

"One of the things I was impressed by when I came to Pulaski Tech was the amount of support for the program by the administration of the college," said Dr. Peggy Peterson, TRiO Scholars director.

Dr. Peterson also presented Dr. Dan F. Bakke with a certificate of appreciation, thanking him for his leadership in the development of the program.

"Everybody's job here is tied to student learning," Dr. Bakke said.

The TRiO Scholars program began Sept. 1, 2005.

"In fact, we had our first open house exactly one year ago today," Dr. Peterson said.
