Rains is new University Studies dean
9/2/2003

Ben Rains of Sherwood has been named dean of university studies at Pulaski Technical College. Previously, Rains served as chair of the department of natural sciences at the college.

A doctoral student in higher education administration at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Rains received a master of science in biological science from the University of Central Arkansas and a bachelor of arts in biological science from Hendrix College.

Since joining Pulaski Tech as an instructor of biological sciences in fall 1996, Rains has developed a number of successful initiatives including the standardization of natural science course content and a program for assessing student academic achievement in biological sciences.

He also designed and developed new microbiology and anatomy and physiology labs, developed an online course in biological science, supervised departmental faculty and coordinated Pulaski Tech's natural science course offerings at Baptist Schools of Nursing and Allied Health.

In his new role with the college, Rains will oversee activities of the Division of University Studies--the largest division of the college, with more than 4,000 students and 37 full-time and 164 part-time instructors.

"We are extremely pleased to have Ben joining our administrative leadership team," said Dr. Dan F. Bakke, college president.  "He will be a tremendous asset to us in developing new courses and programs to meet the needs of students who plan to transfer to four-year colleges and universities or enter the workforce after completing a degree or certificate program at Pulaski Tech."

Rains has made numerous academic presentations in the areas of managing adjunct faculty and serves as co-chair of the statewide ACCESS-AR biological science committee.
