Board approves $2 per hour tuition increase for 2004-05 academic year
The Pulaski Technical College Board of Trustees has approved a 3 percent tuition increase for the 2004-05 academic year.
In-state tuition will increase from $63 per semester credit hour to $65 per hour. The $7 per credit hour technology/facility use fee will remain the same.
Board chair John E. Barnes of Little Rock said the college is committed to keeping its tuition affordable and the college accessible.
"Our tuition rate remains significantly lower than tuition rates at four-year universities in the state. Plus, we're a local two-year college so students save housing and transportation costs."
Based on the college's 2003-04 enrollment, the new tuition rate would generate approximately $240,000 in additional funds for the college.
"At this point, raising tuition is not optional for us," Barnes said. "It is necessary in order to keep our doors open. Basically, the increase keeps us in line with the rate of inflation."
With an unofficial enrollment 6,791 for spring 2004, Pulaski Technical College is the largest two-year college in Arkansas. It is also the lowest funded two-year college, receiving $1,882 in state funding per full-time equivalent (FTE) student. The average two-year college in Arkansas receives $3,914 per FTE student.
In addition to increasing in-state tuition, the board approved an increase in Pulaski Tech's online course fee from $15 to $30 per course. Barnes said online courses require additional resources, such as software licenses, that drive up the cost of instruction.
