Campus urged to protect against flu

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released its recommended responses to influenza for the 2009 - 2010 academic year.

The H1N1 flu strain (formerly known as "swine flu") is expected to pose a threat in the coming months, and the CDC has recommended several health safeguards. Health officials and college administration will monitor the situation closely as the traditional "flu season" approaches.

College personnel are asked to be vigilant in sanitizing high-touch areas, such as open computer labs and office areas.

Here are some steps you can take to protect your health:

Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Use hand sanitizers when water and soap are not readily available.
Use disposable wipes to clean high-touch surfaces in your home or office, including bathrooms, doorknobs, keyboards, remote controls and desktops.
Get a flu shot. Check with your health provider to find out when and where vaccines will be given.
Cover noses and mouths with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Use a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available.
Talk to your health care provider as soon as possible if you develop flu-like complications. Early treatment with antiviral medications often can prevent hospitalizations and deaths.
Stay home until you have been free of fever for at least 24 hours or signs of a fever. Do not come to campus.
