"Superstar Mothers" coming to campus
The Network for Student Success will host "Superstar Mothers of Superstar Sons" on Tuesday, Oct. 6, featuring the mothers of music entertainers Talib Kweli, Common and Mos Def, three of the most positive voices of Conscious Rap in the world of hip hop entertainment.
The mothers will share their stories about molding highly successful sons with a strong sense of values. Their presentation begins at noon and again at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Grand Hall. The later presentation is open to the public.
The mothers include Dr. Brenda Greene, mother of rapper and activist Talib Kweli who is also a full-time professor and director of the National Black Writers Conference at Medgar Evers College, CUNY; Dr. Mahalia Hines, mother of actor and rapper Common, who worked as a principal in the public school system for 17 years and is president of Hip Hop Schoolhouse, which publishes children's books and other educational materials; and Sheron "Umi" Smith, mother of award-winning actor and rapper Mos Def, is most noted for her role as an entertainment manager and artist development consultant. She is the author of an interactive guide for aspiring and professional artists--Shine Your Light: Life Skills Workbook.
The three mothers will offer a new and uplifting perspective on education, community service and maintaining a positive image of black males.
