Pulaski Tech's Weatherization Training Center has received accreditation from the Interstate Renewable Energy Council as an approved training program for the Weatherization Retrofit Installer Technician program.
The program includes three courses: Site Built Weatherization Fundamentals, Mobile Home Weatherization Fundamentals, and Weatherization Home and Safety.
"This accreditation will enable us to offer a program for Arkansas' workforce that meets the requirements for funding such as scholarships and grants," said Roger Smith, director of the Weatherization Training Center. "It demonstrates to our clients that we have quality benchmarks and have a system for ensuring the quality of our trainings and the relevance to local area workforce needs."
Over the next six months, the college will be working to complete requirements to obtain additional accreditation for Weatherization Crew Leader, Energy Auditor and Quality Assurance Inspector designations.
The Weatherization Training Center, located on the college's main campus in North Little Rock, prepares people to work in jobs related to efficient energy usage. Since opening in January 2011, more than 400 students have received training.
The center provides specific job training for weatherization installers, auditors and technicians as well as weatherization crew chiefs and other "green" jobs relevant to efficient energy usage. It also provides green job training for local workers in energy efficiency retrofitting and weatherization services, enabling skilled workers to expand the use of energy efficient practices in the state's homes and businesses.
The college also works with other state agencies and colleges to train workers across the state using a mobile weatherization training lab equipped with an array of training modules similar to those at Pulaski Tech.
Typical weatherization measures include installing insulation; sealing ducts; tuning, repairing or replacing heating and cooling systems; mitigating air infiltration; and reducing electric base load consumption.
