Students with busy lives and demanding work and family schedules can take advantage of a wide variety of online classes that will be offered by Pulaski Technical College during the fall semester. Classes begin Aug. 16.
Pulaski Tech has one of the largest and most successful distance education programs in the state. The college started the program in January 1999 with five classes and 65 students. This fall, Pulaski Tech expects to enroll more than 800 students in 85 online classes.
Online courses are designed to give students the opportunity for quality education using a self-directed environment, Amy Baldwin, distance education coordinator, said. Students can work toward completion of an associate of arts degree or take courses to be applied to other majors at the college.
Courses are taught using the WebCT server application, which allows instructors to post course materials, exams and other information necessary to the students' successful completion of the course.
"Most of our online students also take classes on campus," Baldwin said. "They take classes online because they cannot fit day or evening classes in their already over-booked schedules.
"Some students have small children and want to maximize the time that they have to spend with them. Online classes, then, allow them to do their work when everyone else is asleep."
Baldwin said some students have to work out of town frequently and cannot take a class that meets every week.
"Many of our online students have told us that they would not be able to attend college if it weren't for online classes."
A variety of courses will be offered this fall--from accounting and information technology to mathematics and science classes. Special orientation sessions for new online students will be offered Aug. 12-14 and Aug. 16.
New students can register in person in the student center Aug. 12-14 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. For a complete list of classes and orientation times, visit the Pulaski Tech online courses Web site at www.pulaskitech.edu.
