Opportunities to participate in special events abound at Pulaski Tech on Thursday, September 17. Here are the highlights of the activities:
- Pulaski Technical College will commemorate Constitution Day on Thursday, Sept. 17, the anniversary of the day in 1787 when the U.S. Constitution was signed. Two activities are planned. One is an online "Constitution Quiz" that students can take, via Blackboard, anytime between 7 a.m. and midnight on Sept. 17. Students will have a chance to win prizes, including a three-credit hour class in the spring semester; a $25 gift card to the PTC Bookstore; and a PTC sweatshirt, (winner's choice) from the Bookstore. Free pocket-sizes copies of the U.S. Constitution are available beginning today at the Campus Center Information Desk on the Main Campus; Room 103 at Little Rock-South; and Room 202 at Little Rock-West.
Also on Thursday, History instructor Andre Robinson will present a town hall-style discussion called "An Imperfect Document for An Imperfect World: The Constitution and Contemporary Issues" from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in the Campus Center Food Court.
- Award-winning educator, poet and Third World Press founder Haki R. Madhubuti will be on the Pulaski Technical College Main campus Thursday for a noontime lecture and book signing.
His lecture on "Art, Education and Male Development" will begin at 12 p.m. Thursday in the R.J. Wills Lecture Hall, located on the second floor of the Campus Center. After the lecture, Madhubuti will sign copies of his new book of poetry, Liberation Narrative: New and Collected Poems 1966 to 2009.
Madhubuti is a University Distinguished Professor at Chicago State University where he teaches English. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities and numerous awards, including an American Book Award.
His visit is sponsored by the Pulaski Technical College Student Success Center and Ottenheimer Library.
- Sports fans can meet and greet the PTC Diamonds Baseball Club in Campus Center Grand Hall B at 6:30 p.m. The new team, coached by Gene Whitley, has played several exhibition games and will begin league play in the spring.
- Pulaski Tech and local NBC affiliate KARK will host a premier party for the new sitcom "Community," at 8 p.m. at Ump's Pub and Grill, Dickey-Stephens Park, 400 W. Broadway, North Little Rock. The show will poke fun at a fictional community college.
