Calitia Croy of Bryant, a student at the Pulaski Technical College Saline County Career Center at Bauxite, was awarded a first place gold medal in the nail care technology contest at the 40th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference and SkillsUSA Championships June 26 in Kansas City. Victoria Stelly served as her model in the event.

The SkillsUSA Championships is considered the largest single day of corporate volunteerism in America and valued at $25 million in industry support of donated time, equipment, cash and material. All contests are run by and judged by industry using industry standards for employment. More than 1,000 industry judges participated this year.

Working against the clock and each other, participants proved their expertise in job skills for occupations, as well as leadership skills. Winners receive medallions, prizes and scholarships to further their careers and education.

The nail care technology contest evaluated contestants' preparation for employment in the field of nail care. Contestants demonstrated their ability to perform jobs or skills in their work area and on models, including initial preparation, product and tool control, tip and wrap application, sculptured application, cuticle and nail groove, shape and length, arch and c-curve, surface finish, lacquer/polish, wearable nail art application, overall results of workmanship and a written examination.
