2009 SGA New Orleans Report
Summer Brown, Director of Student Life and Leadership, Adrienne Thompson, Tyrone Sanders, and Sean McCoy, Student Government Association members volunteered in Louisiana for the fifth time this winter. The group volunteered through the United Methodist Louisiana Disaster Recovery center and were housed in the Aldersgate Methodist Church Angel House. The trip was from January 6-9, 2009.
We helped two families in Slidell, LA while we were there. The first house belongs to Linda Tzuanos whose family remained in the house during and were trapped in the house after Hurricane Katrina. After the work of laying quarter round, painting, cleaning floors, and the bathroom, the house was complete and the family was able to begin moving back in. The group worked the second day of volunteering doing mold treatment/remediation for Mr. Charlie Seaberry.
Mr. Seaberry’s home remains in poor shape and has a long way to go to completion. The Louisiana Disaster Recovery ministry still has thousands of families in need of volunteer work. The operation of the volunteer centers and volunteer housing are funded by donations only.
