2011 SGA New Orleans Report
While most students were enjoying their winter break by sleeping in, a dedicated group of Pulaski Technical College students gave up five days of their break to rebuild homes affected by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
The service trip was organized by the Office of Student Life and Leadership and the Student Government Association.
Pulaski Tech students Ryan Anderson, Reginald James, Charles Jones and Jermaine Shelton, along with Michelle Anderson, director of student life and leadership, and Casey Carder, degree audit coordinator for Carl Perkins, left campus on Dec. 12 and returned to campus on Dec. 16.
Work completed by the Pulaski Tech team included cutting and hanging sheet rock, assembling scaffolding, scraping paint and priming exterior boards in preparation for painting.
Pulaski Tech worked on two houses through a partnership with Project Homecoming, a Presbyterian disaster relief organization, and Operation Helping Hands, a Catholic Charities organization sponsored by the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
Both organizations together have helped rebuild nearly 2,000 homes and apartments for the underinsured, uninsured, elderly and disabled of New Orleans, often at a third of the cost charged by contractors.
One of the homes (pictured), located in the Broadmoor neighborhood of New Orleans, was raised onto pilings to meet new flood-level regulations.
Flood waters in this neighborhood reached up to 15.6 feet.
