New Orleans volunteer trip
May 2007
Pulaski Technical College representatives returned to New Orleans on May 21-24 for the college's third trip in the past year to help hurricane victims through the Louisiana United Methodist Storm Relief Center in New Orleans. Summer Brown, Augusta Farver, Tyrone Sanders, and Larry Gary helped “Peaches,” a 64-year-old New Orleans native, prepare her home for rebuilding. The volunteers cleaned out hurricane-damaged items from the garage, tore down Sheetrock, and removed kitchen cabinets. Peaches' brother was living in the badly damaged home at the time. Many New Orleans residents reside in deplorable conditions because they lack the money and/or proper rebuilding skill and supplies. College volunteers plan to make another volunteer trip in January 2008. Before they go, they plan to receive training in hanging Sheetrock.
During the May trip, volunteers visited their houses where they had previously worked. The homeowners were excited to see the volunteers and plan to stay in touch with the Pulaski Tech group. The volunteers also visited the Lower Ninth Ward to observe progress. New Orleans has many signs of hopes but continues to need volunteers and assistance with rebuilding efforts.
Big for a Day
April 2007
The Student Government Association, the PTC Chapter of the Arkansas Association of Women in Two-Year Colleges, and TRIO Scholars hosted Big for a Day on April 14. This event stemmed from the relationship between Pulaski Technical College and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Children waiting to get a big brother or big sister were invited to the event to spend time with a positive role model. About 15 children attended the event and enjoyed face painting, musical chairs, a three-legged race, Baggo, hopscotch, hula hoops, jump rope, basketball, a hot dog cookout, and goody bags. The event provided a community service opportunity for the volunteers and an opportunity to introduce the possibility of college to the little brothers and sisters. A special thanks to the following volunteers: Augusta Farver; Patrick, Tena and Sean Carrigan; Jimmy Pierce; Michelle Verser; Kelly Owens; Ray Owens; Amanda Coleman; Vondra Armstrong; Tonya Willingham; Carol Langston; Clark Atkins; Jason Henry; Jamicia Albritton and daughters; Tracy Courage; Virginia Baugn; Amanda and Scott Wilson; Chrystal Paul; Andrea Cochran; Blake Coleman; Patricia Krug, Tyrone Sanders; Lisa Teer; Torian and Adrienne Thompson; Crystal Corbin; Alicia Hudson; and LaShaune Rostagnd.
