SGA Washington, D.C Trip 2007
On March 16-20, 2007, four members and the advisor of the Student Government Association (SGA) attended the American Student Association of Community Colleges conference in Washington, DC. The delegates included Cheniqua Reynolds, SGA President, Justin Lieber, SGA Parliamentarian, Amanda Wilson, SGA Senator, Cory Shelton, SGA Senator, and Summer Brown, Director of Student Life and Leadership and SGA Advisor.
During the conference, the group met consumer advocate Ralph Nader and Frank Menseland, chair of the ASACC board of trustees, and shared information about Pulaski Technical College information with them. Both were impressed with Pulaski Tech and noted the great needs of the institution.
Speakers at the conference included Dr. Charlene Nunley, President, Montgomery College (MD) and member of the Spellings Commission on Higher Education, and Dr. Pat Stanley, Deputy Secretary of Education for Community Colleges, U.S. Department of Education.
The group also attended great breakout sessions including: Power, Politics, and Conflict, 13 Steps to a Great Student Government, Taking Your Message to Congress: Effective Advocacy with Congress, and How to Make Students Care About Your Student Government.
On Monday, March 19, the Pulaski Tech representatives visited the offices of United States Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, and United States Representatives Vic Snyder and Mike Ross. SGA and ASACC veteran William Clay joined the PTC group during the meetings. The members of Congress were presented a packet of information including PTC fast facts, a catalog, a PTC federal student aid profile, a summary of the cost of textbooks at PTC, federal funding requests, and national community college priorities, voted on by attendees of the ASACC conference. The students also shared personal stories about the importance of Pulaski Tech in their lives. The needs of Pulaski Tech were revealed in great detail and the group believes the College is supported by our district's national leaders. This was a unique and wonderful experience for all who attended.
