COMPASS The COMPASS is a group of computerized placement tests by the American College Testing (ACT) placement programs. Pulaski Technical College uses the COMPASS to place students into courses that match their current skill level in reading, English and math.
Who is required to take the COMPASS?
- First-time entering freshmen seeking a degree, certificate or general studies for transfer.
- Students planning to take English, math or courses that require English or math as a prerequisite.
- Students who have taken the ACT, ASSET or COMPASS more than five years ago and have not since completed a math or English course. Students who do not have a GED and who have not graduated from high school.
Who is not required to take the COMPASS?
- Students who submit ACT, ASSET or COMPASS scores no more than five years old to the Admissions Office.
- Students who have received a "C" or better in college English or math courses. An official college transcript should be on file in the Admissions Office.
- Non-degree seeking students who wish to enroll in a class other than English or math for personal interest only.
There is a non-refundable $10 fee to take all three sections of the COMPASS or a $5 fee for any one section. The COMPASS is an untimed test; however, approximate time to complete the test is two hours. It is administered on a walk-in basis every Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. except when the campus is closed. Please arrive at least two hours prior to test center closing to allow adequate time to complete the assessment (6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 11 a.m. on Saturdays).
Photo identification is required. The COMPASS is scored and the results given immediately following testing. Based on scores, students may be required to enroll in certain classes. Students who have a disability requiring accommodation should contact Disability Support Services at least one week before arriving for the test.
