Common Problems Using WebCT and Solutions
• If you get “Error 1005” when logging into WebCT, turn off the CAPS LOCK key. The username and password are lowercase.
• If you are unable to login to WebCT, please visit WebCT's Browser Tuneup page to verify that your web browser is supported: www.webct.com/tuneup.
• The default cache settings for both Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator do not work well with WebCT. Using the default settings will cause issues with course design, quizzing, and any page where the page reloads or refreshes.
• Many employers and companies set up firewalls as security measures against hackers. Firewalls provide security by closing certain Internet ports, which disables student access to interactive computer applications like WebCT. If you are unable to connect to WebCT at work, your company’s network administrator may need to open these ports. Employers may request the port numbers required to modify their network and provide their employees with greater Internet access.
Here are the ports that need to be opened:
WebCT Port: (TCP) 8900
Chat Port: (TCP) 4445
Whiteboard Port: (TCP) 4567
Java Servlet Engine Port: (TCP) 8009
The information regarding ports comes from http://webct.uark.edu/support/firewall_ports.html
• When trying to log into WebCT, you are redirected to other websites or your computer is overrun by pop-ups, there are two free programs recommended by WebCT, which are designed to find and remove Adware and Spyware. Download and install to your computer, check for updates, and run the programs.

• When trying to log in to WebCT, you get an Internet Optimizer navigational error. To remove Internet Optimizer, follow these steps:
1) Go to the Control Panel on your computer.
2) Click “Add/Remove Programs.”
3) Search for a program called “Active Alert” and “Internet Optimizer.”
4) Click on the program and then click remove.
5) Restart your computer.
Disabling Pop-Up Blocking for WebCT
While using WebCT, if you are unable to view discussion postings, quiz windows, and download links, then you need to disable pop-up blocking for your WebCT server.
Depending on the pop-up blocking software you are using, you may be able to set your WebCT server as an allowed site, or you may need to disable the pop-up blocker while using WebCT.
Pop-up blockers work in the background while you browse the internet. When they detect a pop-up window that may be an unwanted advertisement, they automatically close the window. This can prevent WebCT from performing properly.
To disable pop-up blockers for WebCT:
1) Search your hard drive for any software with "pop-up" in the name. Disable it or set your WebCT server as an allowed site. Examples of popular pop-up blocking applications include:
• Pop-Up Stopper
• Pop-Up Defender
• Pop-Up Zapper
2) Pop-up blocking functions are included in some anti-virus, internet security, personal firewall, and browser programs. Disable the relevant setting in the program or set your WebCT server as an allowed site. Examples of programs that include pop-up blocking functions include the following.
Note: Click the links to read configuration information. If there is no link, refer to the Help in the affected program.
• Norton Internet Security
• Zone Alarm Pro
• Google Toolbar
• Yahoo! Toolbar
• MSN Toolbar
• AOL 8.0 and later
• Safari browser
• Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2
